Berimbau
The Berimbau is the basic instrument of Capoeira.It is a bow mainly made from Biriba wood or even Bamboo.
Main Parts of a Berimbau
- Verga: the core made of biriba or bamboo
- Arame: A metal string – usually found in the inner of car tires
- Cabaca: a modified gourd, dried, opened and hollowed – out
- Baqueta: a wooden stick that when stroke on the arame, sound is produced
- Caxixi: accompanies the baqueta and make a rattle noise
- Dobrao: a small rock or coin is pressed against the arame to change the tone
Types of the Berimbau
Three are the types of Berimbau according to the size of Cabaca (from larger to smaller )and the sound generated:
- Gunga: Low tone – it comes first in the bateria
- Medio: Medium Tone – it comes second in the bateria
- Viola: High Tone- it comes third in the bateria
Atabaque
The atabaque is a Brazilian hand drum. It keeps the rhythm in the Roda ; it must not overpower the berimbau’s sound.
Main Parts of an Atabaque
- body: it is typically made of Main jacaranda wood
- head: fastened to the body by ropes, made of of calfskin.
Pandeiro
A type of tampourine. Its head is made of leather skin or plastic.
Agogo
The agogo is an African musical instrument.
Main Parts of an Agogo
- two hollow iron cones
- a stick: it strike the cones and sound is produced
